In 2015, my daughter joined the Cygnets of San Antonio, a synchronized swimming team which started more than 50 years ago. Since then she’s gained strong swimming and synchro skills. She’s gained self confidence in her body and her athletic ability. And, she’s made some amazing friends.
If you’re curious about synchronized swimming and what it can offer your daughter, here are three reasons she’ll love it:
She’ll learn to love exercise (if she doesn’t already!).
If your daughter loves gymnastics, swimming, and dancing, synchro is the perfect blend of all three! Swimming is a life-long sport that supports our physical as well as mental health and well being throughout our lifetimes. What a gift for a girl to learn from a young age that she can exercise and love it. And, exercise and team sports teach girls confidence and positive body images.
She’ll make friends for life.
Over the three years my daughter has been on the Cygnets team, she’s made life-long friends. Although many of these girls don’t attend the same schools, they stay in touch all year long and have sleepovers and movie dates. They look forward to practice because they know they’ll have fun working hard together. The bond of synchro sisters runs deep!
She’ll learn a competitive sport that’s both team and individually motivated.
Swimmers compete in figures and solos (which are individual) and routines (which are team-based), giving girls all the advantages of a team sport (learning teamwork, responsibility, and respect) while also allowing them to work on their own skills and grow as individual athletes.
Does synchronized swimming sound like something your daughter might like? Now’s her chance to try it: Cygnets of San Antonio offers synchronized swimming summer camps for girls, ages 6-11, on the following dates/times at the Alamo Heights High School Pool:
Session 1: Monday, July 23 – Thursday, July 26, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Session 2: Monday, July 30 – Thursday, August 2, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Each session/week is just $50 per girl. The camps introduce participants to the basic skills of synchronized swimming. A mini-show will be performed on the final day.
To register your daughter for one (or both) of these summer camps, please fill out this Cygnets of San Antonio form.
